The Explorer has been on market almost 25 years, and over the years, this car moved on up from family – oriented, rough wagon to the more sophisticated one. If we take into consideration some of equipment levels, it could almost have a luxury label. Introducing to us the new Explorer Platinum model, Ford is finally maximizing that potential.
The 2016 Ford Explorer will have a brand- new 2,3-liter engine, Eco Boost, four-cylinder. The turbocharged four – banger is replaced with the 2,0 – liter engine EcoBoost available for the base, XLT and Limited trims. The new powerplant will generate 12,5 % more hp and 11 % more torque compared to EcoBoost four – pot. The 2,0 – liter can deliver 240 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque. The 2,3-liter unit should produce around 270 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque.
The other mills are the same. For the base, XLT and Limited models there will be 3,5-liter V-6 as standard, and the 3,5 – liter EcoBoost V – 6 for the Explorer Sport and the new Platinum series. Both the naturally aspirated and the Eco Boost Six-bangers remain the same, producing 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque and 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. For both, there is familiar six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission.
There is a revised four-wheel-drive gauge display, which shows the power distribution for front and rear wheels. The Terrain Management system has 4 terrain modes including normal, sand, snow and mud.
The side sheet metal of the 2016 Ford Explorer remains unchanged, but everything else is pretty much new. Changes are visible in brand – new front and rear facials. The front end has a higher grille with mesh look, while the headlights are more horizontal than before. Around back, the rear pillars are redesigned and the exhaust tips are integrated. The wheel options are: standard 18 – inch and available 20 – inch.
2016 Ford Explorer interior
The cabin changes at the 2016 Ford Explorer were more driver – oriented, without changing basic layout. To improve comfort the door armrests are positioned higher. The infotainment system is revised with buttons in place of the touch-sensitive buttons. New door seals, acoustic glass on XLT and higher trim models, as well as the engine sub frame mounts which are designed to reduce the vibration, all improve the quietness in the cabin of the car.
Some of the interior upgrades on the Platinum trim are: the front seats covered with Nirvana leather, the 10 – inch digital instrument cluster display and one more very cool thing, 500 – watt Sony Audio System with Live Acoustics and Clear Phase which will eliminate sound dispersion out of the car’s cabin.
In standard features are included rain-sensing wipers, lane-keeping system and enhanced active park assist.
